Media Archaeology is a new approach to reading, writing, and making media history. Beginning with a definition of media as “recurring relations among people, practices, institutions, and machines” (Sterne), we will examine a variety of media artifacts—from daguerreotypes to videogames, from praxinoscopes to morphing software to YouTube. Our view of media history will be non-linear and non-hierarchical; we will search for multiple origins of media technology and map out new directions for our mediated imaginations.
