Week 2: no worries

Hi, folks! So, the class list is in flux--students adding, some dropping, as these things go during the first 2 weeks. To avoid confusion and to give y'all a break, I've decided not to make you do a graded blog post this week. Don't forget to complete the reading; we will discuss the 2 articles on Tuesday!

In lieu of a graded blog post, here's what I'd like you to do: post a brief profile of what kind of media you like. You know, what kind of films you're into, what kind of music you listen to, any media artists you're obsessed with--I'll leave it up to you. Think of this as a virtual introduction. Like every blog comment you do in this class, don't forget to sign your first and last name.
I'll start: I love makeover shows, Degrassi Junior High (old and new), Japanese and Czech animation, video art, Strangers with Candy, and the old post-punk band The Fall. Here's one of their videos starring artist/fashion designer Leigh Bowery as the man with polka dots:

I'm a huge drama/horror/psychological thriller addict. My favorite directors are Hitchcock, Val Lewton, John Carpenter, George Romero, and Kubrick. I'm also big into character studies and Over-the-top actors like Cagney and Nicholson. Obsessed with zombies and zombie/gore special effects.

I listen to mostly death/black metal, lots of hip-hop, folk, heavy metal/power metal, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan. I've been preforming in a heavy metal punk band called STORMSTRIKE for a year.

I'm a big Ed Norton fan so I like a lot of his movies such as 25th Hour, Fight Club, American History X, Primal Fear etc. If its a good movie I'll watch it. I also appreciate the work of Michael Mann a lot, he is one of my favorite directors because of the way he uses color and music to get a point across in his films. Lastly, I'm probably one of the only film majors who likes Hip-Hop. Any rap that you hear on the radio I most likely do not listen to. I listen to real hip-hop such as The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Outkast etc.

I also like any movie of social significance, like Crash or The Last Dog in Rwanda and documentaries. I listen to mostly rock, like Mor ve Ötesi, Rammstein, Oomph, etc. and some pop, like Tokio Hotel, Gackt, and Dima Bilan.

As far as music goes, I have so many favorites. I love Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Cloud Cult (they are from my city- Minneapolis!), Sigur Rós, Animal Collective, and other experimental type of music. I’m going to see Sigur Rós this month which will be epic!
As for films, I love foreign films mostly. I think my current favorite is The Motorcycle Diaries. I also love Tsotsi, Yesterday, Amélie, Paris, Je T’aime, and The Edukators. The type of film I want to create is documentary, like Born into Brothels, which is based in the red light district in Calcutta, India. I love people and traveling and learning about culture, so I think a film like that would be something I’d really enjoy.
I also love to read, write, paint, and speak Spanish. I think those count as media… sort of.

My favorite movies are American Beauty, Fight Club, Boondock Saints, and Goodfellas. Any movie that really brings me in or gets me thinking.
My favorite Bands are Dispatch, State Radio, Counting Crows, Jack Johnson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, or pretty much anything from the nineties. The bands I generally enjoy are not absorbed with mainstream commercialism, they are more real in a sense that they create their own music and truly feel and believe in the music they produce.
As far as random media I'm interested in, i like the You tube videos Old Gregg, Smosh, Jon Lajoie, and I'm sure there are more.

And I had the oop criterion of Salo or the 120 days of sodom. Which at one point went for $1,100 dollars on ebay brand new sealed. But its finally back in print after 7 years so I sold my old one. I also really enjoy Kubrick, Sergio Leone, p.t. Anderson, Wes Anderson, Scorsese, De Palma, Coppola, Fincher, Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, Fellini, Pietro Girmini, and tinto brass films.

Most of the music I like i've heard in a movie or on a tv show, especially scorsese, and wes anderson films they really pick good stuff. I also have every single George Carlin album ever released cause I think he is one of the greatest writers/satirists, and comedians of the 20th century.

And for print material I love reading Hunter S. Thompson because he was truly brilliant in his description of people and situations. I also really like the books Go Ask Alice, House of Leaves, The Doors of Preception, A Brave New World, and The Godfather by Mario Puzo.

Alex Aja is brilliant and his horror movies are great.
Anyhow, rock is my medication. Can't wait for Metallica's new album. I love watching Sportscenter and Glenn Beck. I am more a fan of television series (mainly of what use to be the WB) than I am of movies because I like getting to truly see a character and through the series develop and grow. Don't get me wrong I love movies some of my favorite directors are Alford Hitchcock and Frank Darabont. I am a huge fan of up and coming artist and I have done a ton of band promotional stuff. The type of music I mainly like is alternative or acoustic bands like Secondhand Serenade, We the Living, and I have a thing of songs with piano so Jack's Mannequin is up there. I would like to one day make music videos because one of my favorite things to do is interrupt a song and think of ways to put it on film. Another type of media I enjoy more so creating is promotional videos for different causes such as Above the Influence.

My favorite director is Michel Gondry. I really like anything that questions reality and provokes unconventional thought.

As far as film goes, anything from the American New Wave is my favorite. Scorsese, Coppola, Allen, Kubrick, Lumet... anything from the late 60's to late 70's. The Graduate is probably my favorite, excluding anything else from Kubrick or Scorsese. Oh, and Bonnie and Clyde. As for more modern filmmakers, the Coens are obviously amazing, but Soderberg's sex, lies, and videotape is probably my favorite film since the 90's.

I don't watch much TV, if I do, HBO or Showtime have the only decent shows anymore - I can't stand "reality" TV.

I like a diversity of films, such as horror, drama, thrillers, etc. The kind of film I like depends on my mood or the season. For example, I love to watch horror films around this time of year (Halloween). My favorite films include “Silence of the Lambs”, “The Burbs”, “Gone With the Wind”, “Midnight Cowboy”, “The Graduate” and “Stepford Wives”. My favorite filmmakers include Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, Stephen Spielberg, Tim Burton, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese and, especially, M. Night Shyamalan. My music tastes are random. I really like classic rock and country but there are a lot of pop artists that I also listen to.

As an artist overall I am an extremely open person. Though I pretty much can sit through and enjoy and type of movie besides a chick flick I have to say my favorite genre would have to be psychological thriller. My favorite director is M. Night Shyamalan...I'm a fan of every single one of his films. Other directors I specifically enjoy are David Fincher, Scorsese, Tarantino, definitely Guillermo Del Toro...I love what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings...

When it comes to music, I am essentially a die hard hip-hop fan (and artist) myself. It is truly the only music I care enough about to buy, but I delve into other genres from time to to time. Weezer is an amazing band (especially the Blue Album), John Mayer is a living legend on the guitar, John Legend does his thing as well when it comes to telling a good love story...but back to hip-hop for a second. I just want to say that right now my favorite artist doing it is easily Kanye West. I know that it is an obvious and common answer, but this man is a genius and stand out on all fronts of the media scene right now, including fashion, musical innovation/production...just plain old creativity overall.

One last note. My love for hip-hop oozes into my taste for movies quite often so don't be surprised to find me watching movies like Juice, Belly, Menace to Society, Hustle and Flow, Tupac: Ressurrection...

Anyway, I've also been into trance and ambient recently. And noise music. As far as film goes, I love the work of David Lynch, Charlie Kaufman, Terry Gilliam, and Wes Anderson. There are so many great films it's not even worth starting a list.

I'm into all sorts of films. Lately I've been getting into Surrealist film and things of that nature, though I'm not well versed in it. Some of my favorite films include but are not exclusive to (and in no particular order): Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, Fargo, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining (basically any Kubrick film), Ordinary People, Lindsay Anderson's if..., The Dying Gaul, L.I.E., Mean Creek, Meshes of the Afternoon, Chasing Amy, Fight Club, Se7en, Alien, The Fall, Jackie Brown, and many more.

Music-wise I'm heavy into classic rock ca. 1967, with a heavy emphasis on Psychedelic Rock and the British invasion, especially The Beatles, The Doors, The Zombies, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, The Grass Roots, Cream, The Moody Blues, Simon & Garfunkel, The Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, King Crimson, Pink Floyd etc. More contemporary likes include Radiohead, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Slightly Stoopid, Elliott Smith, R.E.M., The Shins, Sublime, System of a Down, Slowdive, Sigur Rós, Ride, The Jesus and Mary Chain and many more.

Hope That Suffices, I know it's late and I'll acceot the consequences but I figured I'd get it done anyway.

I like good movies when I am in the mood for good movies, and bad movies when I am in the mood for bad movies. Finding truth stranger than fiction, I adore documentary film of all kinds, especially those in spirit of direct cinema and cinema verité. I think Error Morris and his Interrortron interviewing technique. I like action and horror films from the late '70s through the early to mid '90's before computer effects dominated truly special effects. I'm not going to list any specific directors or films out of fear of leaving anyone or any film off the list.
I like music. I guess one could call me a fan of metal, hardcore, and punk first. It's all rock'n'roll, including pre- and post- rock music (ex: classical, jazz, blues, etc). I especially like local music, and I have a hard-on Riverwest basement scene.
Oh, I almost forgot tv. I just moved, and left my tv behind. I used to love Fox's Sunday Night lineup when it consisted of Futurama, King of the Hill (most underrated on tv), Simpsons, and Malcomn in the Middle. Family Guy is the most overrated piece of shit on television; it should have stayed canceled, and I would have much better memories of than I do after suffering from ridiculously long bad jokes. I like PBS too. I was a tv student at MATC for two years and practically live in the Milwaukee Public Television for the period of time. I've worked Interchange, Adelente, Black Neuvo, Letters to Santa (producer one episode), pledge drives, the MPTV auction, and a live taping of the American Irish band, Gaelic Storm. I also co-produced and produced student productions that aired MPTV 36. I grew to hate television in my second year, in large part due to the god awful student productions known as StormWatch and Panther Vision (produced by UWM students/grunt work by MATC students). I scored an interview Scott Walker for Panther Vision, and they wouldn't let me extend my time. Idiots don't understand importance of topics, but that will get them ahead in the dreadful world that is television news.
